Steel is one of six service families we offer, held to the same standard as our concrete, framing, and renovation work. The practical benefits are ordinary and real. What Utah asks of metalwork

We build along the Wasatch fault, and steel is where that shows up first. Welded structural connections here aren’t a weld-it-and-walk trade — engineered connections get specified procedures, qualified welders, and special inspections, because a connection that performs in an earthquake is the entire point of putting steel in the building. We fabricate and document to that standard whether the inspector is due that day or not. The plans may change. The standard does not.

Railings and guardrails carry their own quiet rules. Under current Utah-adopted code, guardrails protecting a drop generally need to reach 36 inches in homes and 42 inches in commercial settings, and a handrail has to be genuinely graspable — a profile your hand can close around, not a decorative timber cap. We design to those dimensions from the first sketch, because rebuilding a railing two inches taller after a failed inspection is nobody’s favorite change order.

Outside, wind is the design driver people underestimate. Canyon-wind events along the Wasatch Front can gust hard enough to fold a poorly anchored gate, so we size posts, footings, hinges, and latches for the loads a solid steel panel actually catches — especially on bench lots and near canyon mouths. A gate that still swings true after a Centerville-grade windstorm was footed and framed for it on day one.

What is LiDAR as-built scanning?

LiDAR as-built scanning uses a tripod-mounted laser scanner to capture millions of precise measurements of an existing building or site, producing a 3D point cloud accurate to fractions of an inch. From that data we generate reliable as-built drawings and models — useful when original plans are missing, wrong, or decades out of date. For renovations, additions, and steel fabrication in existing structures, it means parts get made to fit the building that exists, not the building the old drawings describe. One visit, measured once, argued about never.

Who handles the welding and steel fabrication?

Steel fabrication and welding are core Grandview scopes, performed under our Utah B100 general contractor license — verifiable at dopl.utah.gov. The same team handles field measurement, shop fabrication, and installation, so dimensions and details carry straight through from site to shop to final weld.

What drives the cost of custom steel work in Utah?

Design complexity, steel weight and current material pricing, finish (raw, primed, powder-coated, or galvanized), engineering requirements, and site access. A straight shop-primed railing costs far less per foot than a curved, powder-coated one on a third-floor balcony. We give a ballpark planning range after seeing drawings or the site, then a firm proposal.

Do steel stairs, railings, and mezzanines need permits and engineering?

Often, yes. Structural steel, mezzanines, and most stairs need engineered drawings and a permit; many railing replacements don’t, though they still must meet code heights and graspability. Requirements vary by city, so verify with your local building department — or let us handle permitting as part of the project, which is what we usually do.

Can you match or modify existing metalwork in an older building?

Usually. We field-measure or LiDAR-scan the existing conditions, then fabricate to match profiles, spacing, and finish as closely as the original allows. One constraint to know upfront: if an old railing is grandfathered below current height requirements, extending or replacing it typically triggers compliance with current Utah-adopted code.
